Need to Know
by Robyn Harton
In order to get the best service for your project,
any designer will need to know certain things about it. These
are some of the things that a designer will need to know.
What IS your project?
- A logo
- A website
- A redesign of your current website
- A graphic for a website
- A print ad or stationery design
- An business card design
- Something else
What's the purpose of your project? In other
words, why do you want this project done? What are you trying
to accomplish?
- To sell a jillion widgets through your website
- To advertise your business in a magazine
- A logo to identify you or your business at a glance
- Something else
Who are you aiming this project at? Who is
the target audience for your project?
- Friends and Family
- A Board of Directors
- Children
- Yourself alone
- People who buy and use your product or service
- Somebody Else
What are your likes and dislikes about projects like
yours?
- Do you love a certain style or color?
- Do you detest another style or color?
Does this project need to complement existing graphics
or advertising materials?
- Does it need to go with your existing website?
- Does it need to be in your official company color scheme?
What do you envision for this project?
- Obviously this is an essay question. But don't worry, it's
not a test, so you can't flunk.
Are there any limitations we should know about? Such
as...
- You have to be able to fit a logo into a certain space on
a flyer
- You'll be on vacation for the month of August
- It has to be done in a certain shade of blue
- Whatever else
When do you need this project completed?
- in a hurry
- in the next two weeks
- in time for a trade show in June
Knowing too much about a project has never hurt a client
when talking to a designer. Armed with this information, the
designer can suggest ideas, styles, mention concerns, and
whatever else will help get your project going and keep it
running smoothly.
